Lifespan Religious Exploration
- Coming of Age
What is COA?
The Coming of Age (COA) program offers youth in grades 7-9
the opportunity to explore their own spiritual and religious beliefs, and the history and
organization of our Fellowship and the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) as they
prepare to become junior members of the congregation. We want to do our part to assist
our young people in discerning what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist and growing
into adults with purpose, focus and a religious identity.
The transition from childhood to adolescence is an exciting time in the life of our
youth. We would like to offer a challenging, inspiring and fun program to help our
UU kids navigate through an often tumultuous period in their lives confronting their questions
and doubts as part of a supportive, safe community.
What will youth be doing on Sunday mornings?
Group Discussions The curriculum we will be using is “How Can I Know What to
Believe?” by Charlotte Brotman and Barbara Brotman-Marshfield. During the first year
student discussions will focus on three topics: the Bible, beliefs about God and death. The
second year will focus on our UU faith (principles, values, beliefs and history) and attitudes
about human beings and their ability to live lives of goodness, cooperation and justice.
Developing a Credo Statement During both years, participants will also be working on a
statement of his/her beliefs and ethical commitments that will be read as part of the final celebration.
Community Service Participants will also be carrying out community service projects within the
UU community and in the community they live in.
